DIET REVIEW 1 - The Dukan Diet Is The Fast Weight Loss No Hunger Diet

The Dukan diet is a fast and effective weight loss solution that puts you in control. Diets that force you to count every calorie before you eat or starve yourself in order to lose weight are no good. Not only to they not work, in the case of starvation diets, they are extremely difficult to stick to. The problem is that on these diets you eat almost the same foods but in smaller quantities. Of course this will help you to lose weight in the long term but only if you stick it out for months. The reason diets such as these are so difficult to follow is because the foods you are eating actually create the desire to eat more food. Sticking to a low calorie diet while you are constantly hungry and craving food is next to impossible. This is why so many people fail on such diets. It is also why so many people have being seeing success on the Dukan diet since it cuts out those foods that increase your appetite and make you feel hungrier.

When he created his diet thirty years ago, Dr. Pierre Dukan understood how important motivation is when a person is dieting. Which is why he put together a plan that meant people lose weight fast (who wants to stick around on a diet that takes weeks to show even the slightest improvement?) and they wouldn't feel hungry or crave food while they were dieting.

Think of the diets you have already been on. What was the thing that made you give it up? Weren't you just sick and tired of feeling starving all the time, depriving yourself of food and actually not seeing very much in the way of results! On the Dukan diet you can see the weight loss in just a few days. More importantly, other people will be able to see it. This means that within two weeks you will have people commenting positively on your weight loss. It could also mean putting back on those clothes stuck at the back of your closet for being too tight.

The best thing of all is that will you are losing the weight you won't be starving yourself. In fact you are allowed to eat as much as want of the allowed foods. Beef steak, chicken, fish, you can snack on it all day long if you want to. Imagine losing weight fast on a diet without ever feeling hungry, snacking whenever you want.

Remember that the Dukan diet is no fad. It has been around for thirty years. The reason you may not have heard of it until recently is that the official book was only translated into English last year (2010). Since then, thousands of people have successfully and easily lost weight following this diet.

Start the change now. If you're ready to lose weight fast without hunger click Dukan diet to begin your journey. And for all of your cookbook essentials with the Dukan diet click here.

How to Lose Weight From Your Cheeks and Face

Method 1 of 2: Do Facial Exercises

  1. Lose Weight from Your Cheeks Step 6 Version 2.jpg
Chew gum. Not only can chewing gum calm your nerves and freshen your breath, but it can also help you lose weight from your cheeks. The repetitive chewing motion will help strengthen your jaw. The best part is, you won't even feel like you're doing an exercise. You can set a goal of chewing gum for just a few minutes after every meal.
    • Just make sure not to chew gum so much that it starts hurting your jaw.
  2. Lose Weight from Your Cheeks Step 7.jpg
Do the "X-O" exercise. Profoundly pronounce "X-O" at least fifteen times. Take a break and repeat the exercise three times. This is an easy maneuver that will help you move your jaw in two different ways, which will strengthen your jaw and burn fat from your cheeks. You can do this exercise any time -- even when you're at your desk at work.
  3. Lose Weight from Your Cheeks Step 8.jpg
Do the jaw opener. Open your mouth round and wide and hold this pose for a few seconds. Then, relax your jaw and repeat this motion nine more times, for a series of ten repetitions. You can repeat this move three times a day. If you do too many of these exercises at once, your jaw may get sore.
  4. Lose Weight from Your Cheeks Step 9.jpg
Do the cheek lift. Lift up your cheeks toward your eyes as high as you can. Use the corners of your mouth to help lift your cheeks. You should feel like you're trying to form a strained, awkward smile. You can even shut your eyes tightly to help lift your cheeks.
    • Hold each cheek lift for ten seconds and repeat this exercise several times.
  5. Lose Weight from Your Cheeks Step 10.jpg
Make "fish lips." Draw in your cheeks until you're making fish lips by puckering out your top and bottom lip. Hold this position as you try to smile. Hold the smile for ten seconds and repeat the position for ten counts.[6]
  6. Lose Weight from Your Cheeks Step 11.jpg
Make puffy cheeks. Close your mouth and fill your cheeks and mouth with air. Then, move the air from one cheek to the other as slowly as you can. Move the air from one cheek to the other at least ten times, and take the time to fill your cheeks with air again if necessary. Repeat this exercise three times daily.[7]
  7. Lose Weight from Your Cheeks Step 12.jpg
    7
Make puffy cheeks with pursed lips. To do this exercise, just purse your lips and suck in your cheeks. Hold this pose for a few seconds and then puff out your cheeks as far as they will go. Hold the puffy cheeks for a few seconds and then puff them back in. Repeat this exercise ten times per series and three times daily.[8]
  8. Lose Weight from Your Cheeks Step 13.jpg
Smile. Smiling also exercises your facial muscles and will make you lose those chubby cheeks. You can just smile on your own, holding each smile for ten seconds and repeating this action ten times, or you can make a goal of smiling more in your daily life. Not only will this make you lose weight from your cheeks, but it can help you feel more positive throughout the day.[9]
  9. Lose Weight from Your Cheeks Step 14.jpg
Massage your cheeks after exercising. After completing a series of facial exercises, gently rub your fingers over your cheeks and jaw in a circular motion. This will help relieve tension and soreness after exercising.

Method 2 of 2: Using Makeup to Minimize Fatter Areas of the Face

Makeup is used to disguise all manner of things on the face. It can also be used to reduce the sense of breadth.
  1. Lose Weight from Your Face Step 11.jpg
Use blush that is than the hue of your skin. Draw it from the exterior of the face to the inner. It gives an impression of more sculpted cheeks and looks good.
  2. Lose Weight from Your Face Step 12.jpg
Use contouring to thin the face. Contouring can make a less defined face seem thinner, by accentuating the cheekbones and using shading to tone down and highlight different parts of the face.
    • Contouring can make already-slim faces seem hollow and tired. Be careful how much contouring is used.
    • Ask for a contouring lesson with a local makeup artist. This person will be able to best advise you on what to play up and what to tone down with respect to your own face. It takes time to learn to contour well, so keep practicing.
  3. Lose Weight from Your Face Step 13.jpg

Arch your eyebrows. Arched eyebrows that have a little thickness (but not too much) can slim down a face.[4] These can be made to stand out by using a shade slightly darker than your natural eyebrow color.
  4. Lose Weight from Your Face Step 14.jpg
Use concealer to cover up under-eye circles. These circles can add the appearance of weight to your face.
  5. Lose Weight from Your Face Step 15.jpg
Use lighter lip color. Darker lipstick colors can give an impression of heaviness. By using lighter lipsticks, you can make lips appear slimmer.

How to Create a Weight Loss Plan That Works for You

Do you always slip up when trying to get rid of extra poundage? Is it difficult for you to stay on track when trying to lose weight? Many people have this problem due to lack of motivation and pure laziness. No worries, there is a way to keep on track, if not push you even further. Read this wiki to learn how.

1
Go to your doctor to find out exactly how much you should be aiming to lose, if any. Your doctor can also help you determine whether you're physically capable to do strenuous exercises and workouts. They can also give you some basic tips on calorie counting and decide what will work best for you. I understand many people don't like the stress of going to the doctor with the possibility of being diagnosed with something critical, but just get over it and go. It's not going to hurt you. In fact, it will do the exact opposite. It's better to know now when it's early than later in bed at three in the morning.

2
Go to the local supermarket and stock up on fresh, healthy food. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what's healthy and non-healthy so don't stress over this too much. The key here is that you're going to be doing a lot of snacking throughout the day so try to buy [a lot] of snacks. No, I don't mean Lays Potato Chips and Doritos. I mean berries, melons, assorted nuts (except cashews), Nature Valley granola bars, apples... you get the picture. Oh yeah, pick up a couple of sticks of sugarless gum (Orbit is best, in my opinion). They're very helpful when dealing with snack cravings.

3
Buy or make your own calendar. This will be the number-one most important thing here. If you're feeling artistic, you can make your own calendar using a computer software program and design to your heart's desire. Just make sure you have enough months in your calendar (EX: If you're aiming to lose 30 pounds, have at least 4 months. If you're aiming to lose 100 pounds, have 12 months. If you need to lose more than 100 pounds, I'd recommend asking a doctor how long it should take you).

4
Pick a day where you don't have much planned (preferably within the week) and circle it with a Sharpie marker. This will be your starting point. Go to the back of your calendar and circle an appropriate day in which you will finish. This way, you'll have a specific deadline to meet which will give you a path to follow. Now it's time to get logical and a little creative. Take three Sharpie markers of different colors (let's use blue, pink, and gray in this case). Using three forms of exercise (strength training, walking, and cardio in my case), assign a color to each.
  • Strength Training = Blue
  • Walking = Pink
  • Cardio = Gray
  • Mark on your calendar which days to do each specific workout.
  • It's better to assign your tasks randomly so that a) you won't get sick of the same routine and b) so that you can "shock" your body into losing weight.

5
Post your calendar in a spot where you'll always see it and don't forget to do what it says. If it says you have to do cardio, do it. If you're a little sore, don't make it so intense; jump rope if your muscles are sore.

6
Assign yourself a reward at the end of every other week if you manage to keep on track. For reward week, make the reward worth more. Here are some examples:
  • After 2 weeks - day of relaxation
  • After 4 weeks - manicure at the salon (yes, guys can get manicures, too; have those nails buffed!)
  • After 6 weeks - dinner at an exquisite restaurant
  • After 8 weeks - haircut and dye
  • After 10 weeks - bowling night with your friends/family
  • After 12 weeks - buy three new outfits at your favorite store
  • After 14 weeks - facial and massage at the spa
  • After 16 weeks - shopping spree!

7
Remember the age-old saying, "Don't give up!" It's true, do NOT give up. The hardest part about losing weight is getting started, so the earlier you start, the more you'll be inclined to finish. If it helps, think about your next reward week. Imagine yourself cutting into a tender piece of steak in a dimly-lit restaurant wearing a cherry red dress or showing off your bowling skills to your buddies down at the local alley.
  •   Try not to think about the facial massage or shopping spree when you're only at week two because you'll get discouraged if you don't lose the amount of weight you hoped you would lose. If you're on week 3, only think about that manicure!

Tips

  • If you're having trouble counting calories, here's an idea: pile your plate with portion sizes you would usually have. Then, using a fork or knife, cut everything in half -- every main dish, every side dish, and even your drink (except water or milk). Put the other half on a dish and cover it with tinfoil and stick it in the fridge. Voila! Now, tomorrow night, you won't have to cook dinner! It will just be every other night.
  • Never work yourself too hard. it's bad for your health and wears your body down.
  • Drink filtered water only. No bottled water -- most water companies water comes from wells underground and are not filtered properly (like Aquafina). Instead, purchase a light-weight metal water bottle and fill it with filtered Brita or Pur water. By doing this, you'll save tons of money and keep those plastic bottles out of landfills.
  • Don't drink diet soda of any kind. This might be the #1 rule of any weight loss regimen, but it's true. Diet soda might not contain any calories or carbs, but they contain chemicals such as aspartame which actually increase appetite. If that doesn't convince you, think of it this way: if you're not drinking calories or sugar or carbohydrates, what are you drinking?
  • Some people don't like the taste of water. If you don't, try adding a lemon or lime slice to it to give it some zest. The vitamin C is also a bonus, too.
  • It can help to eliminate salt (which retains water) and sugar from your food completely, or just cut down drastically.
  • When grocery shopping, take a second look at everything you're putting in your cart and ask yourself, "Will this help me lose weight?" If the answer is no, put it back on the shelf and walk away as fast as you can.
  • If you're in school, it's best if you do this plan during the summer, starting as early as possible. That way, you can come back to school next year slimmer and healthier. Try to start on June 1st to get a head start.
  • When lifting weights, increase the amount of weights instead of the amount of reps.
  • If you're too busy to workout, sneak them into your appointments and activities. If you need to go grocery shopping, try walking to the nearest deli instead and only get what you really need. If you have to drive to a meeting across town, go a little earlier than you planned: park a couple of blocks away, take the stairs, "get lost" (wander the building for a while to burn off extra calories).

Warnings

  • If you're losing weight with other family members or friends, try not to get too competitive in losing weight. A little competition can be very motivating, but don't try to become as competitive as contestants on The Biggest Loser or you'll seriously hurt yourself.
  • Don't get discouraged if you've been dropping like a stone and suddenly come to a plateau. That just means your body is getting used to your new body. This is also a chance to challenge yourself and change up your routine.
  • Your results may vary.
  • Don't weigh yourself every day. Your body's weight is supposed to fluctuate about two pounds every day. Instead, weigh yourself every other week.
  • When exercising, only do as much as you can. Yes, try to push yourself, but if you're feeling dizzy or dehydrated, take a break for a while.
  • Consult your doctor for more nutrition information as I am not a doctor.

Tips for a Healthy Valentine's Day

From intimate meals to decadent desserts, couples across the globe will be celebrating romance this February 14th. Love it or hate it, Valentine's Day remains one of the biggest restaurant nights of the year - one that often involves heavy dinners. But with a few tips and some planning, you can get through the big night without adding inches to your waistline.

Step away from the bread basket. If you'd like a roll, grab one then move it outside of your reaching distance. The same goes for chips, should you be at a Mexican restaurant. Grab a small handful and then stay away from them the rest of the night.

Meal modifications are key. Feel free to make special requests. Ask the waiter if they can put the sauce on the side - or to substitute veggies for the french fries. Find out if your meal can be made without butter, oil or salt...anything that could help cut down on calories. And remember: in terms of calories, grilled is usually better than fried and baked is better than braised.

Start out healthy. Consider ordering a light salad or soup to kick things off. This will help to fill you up before you dive into the big meal. You also might want to split an entrée with your significant other.

Practice portion control. Remember that restaurant sizes are often larger than normal. Consider eating half of your meal and putting the rest in a doggie bag.

Avoid all the bells and whistles. Don't add a bunch of extras to your meal. When it comes to a salad, avoid topping it off with buttery croutons, grated cheese, bacon and dollops of high-fat dressing. The same goes with a burger, baked potato and other entrees.

Think red. Red bell peppers, radicchio, cherries, strawberries, red beans, red onions and tomatoes, for example, are all packed with vitamins, cancer-fighting antioxidants or cholesterol-busting fiber and protein. In addition, a daily glass of red wine is believed to help reduce the risk of blood clots and keep the cardiovascular system in shape. So forgo that cocktail, which can be loaded with sugar, and have a glass of red wine instead (and ask if they serve a light version).

Don't always give the gift of chocolate. If you and your significant other are trying to lose or maintain weight, consider purchasing a fruit basket instead of a box of chocolate, or baking a low-calorie dessert. It's also important to remember that a number of sugar-free candies and chocolate brands are available and can be found at your local grocery store or the candy section of an area pharmacy. A bouquet of flowers, healthy cookbook, personal training sessions or a day spa gift certificate could also prove worthy gift substitutes.

Do not completely deprive yourself. Valentine's Day is a time for laughter, fun and food. Having a small slice of cake or a couple truffles will not lead to weight gain. Moderation is key. And if you do pop the lid off that box of chocolates this Valentine's Day, don't feel guilty. Research indicates chocolate is chock-full of healthy compounds and may actually help prevent heart disease, enhance immune systems and give us a feeling of well-being.

Consider dining in this year. A great way to save calories, money and avoid crowds. Find an easy reduced calorie meal that you can cook with or for your significant other at home. Rent some romantic movies and make a healthy dessert, like strawberry shortcake sprinkled with your favorite low-calorie sweetener, and enjoy!

Extreme Fast Weightloss Solutions - Do They Really Work?

Apparently, people want to get thin, and they want to get thin NOW. This is the reason why there are so many extreme fast weightloss solutions being touted about in the World Wide Web and beyond. Most of these products are herbal remedies that advertise themselves as extreme fat burners, "guaranteed" to burn off layers of excess adipose tissues. Others are cream-like, or clear liquid preparations that could be applied on the skin that should penetrate through the epidermis and melt away trouble areas (especially handy if your trouble areas are relegated to one or two body parts only.) And others still are stronger medications that are supposed to speed up your metabolism, helping you burn off unwanted calories even when you rest. In any case, with so many extreme fast weightloss solutions to choose from, it's easy to get lost in the promises of instant thinness. But do they really work?

The truth is: these extreme fast weightloss solutions do work... sometimes and only for a certain group of people. More often than not, they don't. Here's why:

People are built differently - from the inside and out. The same way that your brown hair is not the same shade as your neighbor's brown hair; people have varying internal constitutions and outward appearances. This means that your metabolism differs greatly from all the other people in this planet. The time it takes for you to shed off excess adipose tissue is also unique, as with what kind of food makes you gain weight fast.

Over-the-counter extreme fast weightloss solutions are basically generalized preparations created to aid specific groups of people with specific problems. For example, herbal remedies for fat burning works well with people who respond to herbal remedies, who sheds fat with ease, and who do have fats to burn in the first place. Anyone else who falls short of these 3 categories will most likely find themselves on the shorter end of the weight loss stick.

The cream-like or clear liquid extreme fast weightloss solutions might work for a few people, especially those who do not have sensitive skin; who can tolerate skin applications of this kind; and who wants to trim off only one or two parts of their bodies, like flabby arms or jiggling thighs. The stronger medications for metabolic aid, is only applicable to people who respond well to strong preparations, and who have no problem with drastic internal bodily changes.

Besides, according to health experts and medical professionals, extreme fast weightloss solutions are usually not safe to try on your own. Losing too much weight in a very short amount of time is bound to lead to other health concerns like failing internal organs or suffering from the effects of mineral and vitamin deprivation. In short, the body literally shuts down due to starvation.

This is primarily the reason why safe weight loss program is usually deigned specifically for one person alone, taking account of the person's specific medical and nutritional needs and capabilities. Admittedly, this kind of weight loss program does take a longer time to complete, but the results are more permanent and safer to continue in the end.

Myths, Facts And Green Smoothie Benefits For Your Health

Unless you have been hiding in a cave, we are sure you have heard of the astounding health benefits of your green smoothie. But are green smoothies as nutritionally impressive as they seem?
Keep in mind when making delicious green smoothies, you should add healthy fats to your greens. Since vegetable nutrients are better absorbed when ingested with fats.
Try adding full-fat coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut cream, Greek yogurt, or nut butters to increase vitamin absorption. Find out if green smoothies are the best way to get your nutrients in this great article from One Green Planet.

Green Smoothie Benefits

by: One Green Planet
Green smoothies have attracted massive fans from the health community for decades…celebrated for their impressive nutrient content, convenience, and ease of consumption. There are even full books dedicated solely to green smoothie recipes, like Victoria Boutenko’s Green Smoothie Revolution and the recent Bo Rinaldi’s The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Green Smoothies. In fact, I advocate their benefits everywhere I speak, included recipes for green smoothies in both of my books, and even demonstrate them on shows like Reluctantly Healthy and The Dr.Oz Show.
However, there are some allegations floating about, accusing green smoothies of being harmful. They include:
  • Raise blood glucose levels
  • Enable the consumption of too many calories at one meal
  • Damage endothelial cells, cause metabolic syndrome, obesity, fatty liver, etc. due to the high levels of fructose
  • Can lead to kidney stones since leafy greens have high oxalate content
Let’s break these down…

Blood Glucose Levels

Overall, there is no science that I am aware of directly implicating green smoothies as suspect in any of these accusations. There is, however, evidence supporting similar issues that people are hypothesizing that apply to green smoothies, too. For instance, we know that fruit juice typically raises insulin levels quicker than the whole fruit because the fiber is removed.
However, with green smoothies, the fiber remains, only it is broken down and may go through the digestive tract quicker than in its whole form. If you are diabetic or pre-diabetic, or are concerned about this, you can slow down the glycemic response (and accompanying insulin release) to a green smoothie by:
  • Adding some fat or protein to the smoothie via seeds or almond milk, for instance
  • Using more leafy greens and other vegetables (celery, carrots, or avocado) and less fruits
  • Choosing higher-fiber fruits like berries, mango, and pears over lower-fiber fruits like bananas and grapes
  • If you have diabetes and notice an elevated blood glucose response after trying these adjustments, perhaps you are sensitive and should avoid them.

Calories

When it comes to calories, most vegetable and fruit smoothies can contain anywhere between 200-500 calories per glass. My enormous It’s Easy Being Green Smoothie from The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Plant-Based Nutrition provides 460 calories for a whopping 36 ounces (equal to 4.5 cups)!
It is so filling, I dare you to finish it! Thus, you can easily control for the calories simply by making a smaller smoothie, using it as a meal replacement, or compensating with the rest of your meal to fit your caloric requirements.

The Fructose Controversy

There is indeed evidence that high intake of fructose may lead to metabolic syndrome, obesity, fatty liver, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, high blood pressure, and even kidney disease (here and here, for example).
But what is fructose? Fructose is a simple sugar, a monosaccharide. For centuries, fructose was primarily consumed from natural sources like fruits and honey.
In the last few decades, a main source for fructose became sugar, a.k.a. “sucrose,” a disaccharide with equal parts fructose and glucose. Additionally, man created high-fructose corn syrup in the 1970s, offering up an opportunity for food manufacturers to save money, utilize the excess corn supply, and sweeten processed foods.
Fructose consumption skyrocketed from approximately 4 percent of total calories before the year 1900 to an estimated 12 percent of calories now.
But just because fructose may be up to no good doesn’t mean that the naturally-occurring fructose in fruits and vegetables have the same impact as the sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup. green smoothies facts and myths
This study and this one differentiate and note that not all fructose is the same, pointing out that fructose in fruit comes packaged along with fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals that may outweigh any potential risk.
In this letter to the editor from the Journal of The American Dietetic Association, it is postulated that the evidence pointing to fructose alone as cause for these chronic conditions may not consider excessive calorie intake as a possible confounding variable. It also suggests we need good human trials before we make conclusions on the metabolic effects of fructose.
By the way, the only research on endothelial cell injury that I found was this study that used pure fructose and was performed on rats.

Kidney Stones and Oxalates

Only about 10 percent of the population experience kidney stones in their lifetime. The most common types of calcium stones are listed in this table from the Canadian Medical Association; of which the hyperoxaluric one is associated with excessive consumption of leafy greens and other veggies.
Concerns over green smoothies and kidney stones are in relation to the hyperoxaluria type. Oxalates are salts of oxalic acid, an organic acid found in many fruits and vegetables. They are normally formed into soluble salts and excreted in the urine. However, excess levels may lead to the formation of calcium oxalate stones in the kidney.
This condition is very rare, usually genetically-based or may be due to dietary causes, like low calcium intake. In fact, increased intake of dietary calcium is recommended to reverse hyperoxaluria and prevent stone formation. Dehydration can also be a factor contributing to these types of kidney stones.
For the rare circumstances where there are kidney stones from hyperoxaluria, restricting oxalates may be warranted. There is also evidence suggesting that higher dietary intake of calcium may be protective against kidney stones, a mineral also abundant in leafy greens.
Because of the extreme rarity of kidney stones due to oxalate intake and the fact that most people don’t even come close to overconsuming these foods, avoiding them is unwarranted. There are far too many benefits from their consumption to risk foregoing them.

Speaking of Green Smoothie Benefits…

Here are just some of the myriad reasons to bring back the love of green smoothies:
It’s a very convenient and efficient method of consuming adequate servings of fruits and vegetables.Only between 9.5 and 14 percent of the U.S. population takes in the minimum recommended intakes of fruits and vegetables…and that number includes fries and ketchup!
Fruit and vegetable pureed drinks significantly increase “dietary and plasma phytochemical concentrations with a trend towards increased endothelium-dependent vasodilation.” (George, et al, 2012) This, in turn, decreases one’s risk for most chronic diseases.
So many of us have a tough time remembering to chew our food well enough. Nutrients in plants are trapped within their cell walls. Humans are not designed to break down cellulose (plant fiber). Thus, blending the plants breaks down the cell walls for you, releasing the nutrients, and enabling adequate absorption of nutrients…

I Can't Exercise! How Can I Lose Weight Without Exercise?

Weight is a problem for a large percentage of Americans - and the biggest problem is how to lose weight when you're over 50. You can't do the same sorts of exercise routines that younger people have the ability to do. So where do you go for weight loss? It's simply not feasible to go out jogging, or lifting weights at the gym - particularly as you get older injuries become far more serious, and take longer to heal.
I understand the problem well - having spent many years in the Marine Corps, but then leaving the service, only to then find that my weight ballooned as I stopped the strenuous exercise routines that all Marines undergo daily. So I started running again, as you might know, Marines like to run 3 miles for the fun of it. But old injuries started popping up, and my knees and back couldn't take the long runs.

Yet I needed to lose weight... does this sound like a familiar problem?

The answer I found was two-pronged, I had to find another form of exercise that I could do with my tired broken down body - and I had to change the way I eat. The solutions that worked for me was learning about food - what was good for me, and what was not. (It's downright amazing what ordinary foods Americans eat that is simply bad for you!)
The exercise that I found, after a great deal of research, was a 'rebounder'. Sometimes known as a mini-tramp. The exercise you get simply jumping up and down on a rebounder is almost beyond belief... after my first 30 minutes, I had to stop - I was sweating as if I'd just finished a three mile run! Yet my knees felt no pain, and my back was in fine shape. So for me, a combination of relearning what and how to eat, and finding an exercise that I could do with no pain was my answer. I dropped close to a hundred pounds, and am still losing weight. What about you?

Due to time constraints I typically do half of a workout in the early morning and either finish it that night or the next morning. I do not spend a lot of time in the gym working out. This program is so doable even for someone who works full-time and is very involved in my church, son’s school and has a very active social life. 7 Healthy Holiday Tips To Help You Reach Your Weight Loss Goals

With visions of sugar plums and holiday treats dancing in your head it is time for you to follow my healthy holiday tips for weight loss. According to the British Nutrition Foundation, between the holidays of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s, people gain between three and seven extra pounds. Although that may not seem like a large weight gain, once this weight is gained most people do not lose it. As your certified trainer I can help you with my healthy holiday tips so that you can reach your weight loss goals!

1. Start Your Day with a Workout

With the sun rising later in the winter due to daylight savings, it is often hard to get motivated to get up out of bed and get going. Get up and push yourself to a wake up workout so you have the payoff of bettered health, more energy, and a better body. I rise early every day because this is usually the only time I can find to dedicate to focus on my personal fitness so do what works with your schedule. This is one of my effective holiday tips that really transforms you.

2. Stock Your Home with Healthy Treats

Ditch the apple pie from your countertop and replace this with some healthy baked apples with a sprinkle of cinnamon you will be sure to love. You will save some calories and your waistline by making the healthier choice. And make sure your home is stocked with plenty of fruit as your healthy treats.

3. Entertain The Healthy Way

Do you find yourself begging your guests to take the leftover pie home so you can eliminate temptation? Stop feeding your guests all the foods that you do not even want in your home and make skinny changes. If you make dark chocolate covered strawberries you are providing your guests with some antioxidants and you will be guilt free. A fruit salad is always the star of all the dessert platters so why not make this for your next holiday event.

 4. Keep a Food Diary

Start keeping a food diary so you can track your food intake. This comes in handy over the holidays when you are cooking. Often when we graze throughout the day we are unaware that all this extra noshing can add up to mega calories. You can track your calories online on myfitnesspal.com or any other online site you choose.

5. Share Your Knowledge with Friends And Family

If your friends and family are asking you how you look so good, share your fitness and health knowledge. If you pay it forward and motivate them, you will better their health and you will feel great. Remember to only share this information to willing individuals because if they are not interested you could get on their nerves which is definitely not a good thing. I never push but I always help those that have open arms and positive energy.

6. Enjoy Your Hot Beverage

Did you know? If you substitute your daily latte, apple cider or hot chocolate for a cup of coffee or tea, it can save between 150 and 500 calories a day. Over the three-month winter period of pre and post-holiday time, that’s a saving of up to 21,000 calories - equivalent to 6 pounds of body fat! Now that is well worth the swap!

7. Catch Plenty of Zzzzzs

According to a Case Western Reserve University study, women who sleep for five or fewer hours a night are 32 percent more likely to gain weight and 15 percent more likely to become obese than women who sleep for seven or more hours. It is believed that lack of sleep may slow metabolism or decrease the calories burned by spontaneous activities such as fidgeting. What better reason could there be to get some extra shut eye this winter? Eeek I better start getting more sleep! Do you get adequate sleep?

I hope my tips will help you avoid holiday weight gain and have a blessed and healthy holiday season. Wishing you good health and cheer for a happy new year! Are you ready to make healthy changes this holiday season?

Effects of Stress on Weight Loss

The effects of stress on weight loss can be quite dramatic! High stress, which raises cortisol levels in your body, stops your body from burning fat and losing weight through several mechanisms.
It seems that we experience some degree of stress almost every day of our life. Work, family, relationships, financial, and even travel can cause us varying levels of stress at certain times.
Since stress appears to be a constant in our lives, it is important to be aware of the effects of stress on our ability to lose weight and keep it off.
Effects of Stress on Weight Loss
Even though the stresses that our ancestors experienced many years ago are vastly different to what we experience today, our bodies respond in exactly the same way. Plus, different types of stress (i.e. physical, psychological and emotional) all invoke the same response, which is an increase in the output of stress hormones, primarily cortisol.
Cortisol is a hormone produced by the outer portion of the adrenal glands, which sit on top of the kidneys. It has the effect of increasing the blood sugar level, suppressing the immune system and aiding in fat, protein and carbohydrate metabolism. It prepares the body for action; it's the 'fight or flight' hormone.
Unfortunately though, there is a strong correlation between cortisol and obesity and there are several mechanisms through which cortisol may cause you to put on weight as well as stop you from losing weight.

Here are the Effects of Stress on Weight Loss

Increases blood sugar level

Cortisol blocks the absorption of glucose into cells and also promotes the production and release of glucose from the liver, which come from amino acids that have been liberated from muscle tissue.
Prolonged cortisol production leads to constantly elevated blood sugar levels, which in turn, causes insulin levels to rise. Since insulin stops the mobilisation and utilisation of fat as a fuel source as well as promoting fat storage, losing weight becomes difficult. Furthermore, prolonged insulin levels leads to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is strongly correlated with obesity.

Increases muscle loss

Cortisol is the most 'catabolic' hormone in the body, which means it promotes the breakdown of body tissues, including muscle. Since muscle is one of the most metabolically-active tissues in the body a loss of muscle results in a depression of the metabolic rate, which makes fat burning and weight loss more difficult.

Increases fluid retention

Cortisol has a similar (but weaker) effect to aldosterone on the kidneys. This means it causes the retention of sodium and water along with the release of potassium. The increased water retention in the body may lead to weight gain even though the additional weight is only water and is not due to fat accumulation.

Negatively affects sleep

Cortisol is often referred to as the 'anti-sleep hormone'. This is one of the major effects of stress. Under normal circumstances, cortisol peaks early in the morning just prior to waking; it gives us the necessary 'jolt' to wake us up and get us moving. Then, as the day progresses, it tends to taper off and reaches its lowest point in the evening just before and during the first part of the sleep cycle.
People with insomnia have been shown to have high levels of cortisol in the evening, which affects their ability to sleep. Stressful events during the day may also cause high levels of cortisol in the blood stream in the evening, which negatively affects sleep.
Poor sleeping habits, as one of the effects of stress, are strongly associated with weight gain for several reasons. During sleep the body goes through the processes of repair, recuperation, recovery and rebuilding of body tissues. If sleep is impaired then this process cannot occur as effectively as it should and therefore the body's ability to rebuild lean tissues, like muscle tissue, is negatively affected. This has a negative effect on the body's metabolism and fat-burning ability.
Also, since growth hormone, our body's most powerful lipolytic (fat burning) hormone, gets produced mostly at night during deep sleep, if our sleep habits are impaired due to high cortisol levels, the body's production of this hormone also gets impaired as does our ability to burn off body fat effectively.

Affects thyroid hormone production

Cortisol has the effect of increasing the conversion of T4 (thyroxine) into rT3 (reverse tri-iodothyronine) instead of T3 (tri-iodothyronine). T3 is the most active thyroid hormone and is responsible for controlling the metabolism of all body cells whilst rT3 is the 'brake' that blocks the T3 receptors on cell membranes. Having higher rT3 compared to T3 slows the metabolism down, causes thyroid problems and makes weight gain more likely.

Lowers anabolic hormones (i.e. testosterone)

The body's production of cortisol and testosterone relies on the same precursor hormone, pregnenolone. Therefore, if the level of one hormone in the body is high, the other is low. Since testosterone is a powerful anabolic hormone, which helps to maintain and build lean tissue, it can have a dramatic effect on a person's metabolism and therefore their ability to burn fat and lose weight.
By the same token, if cortisol is high, testosterone will be low and so will the ability to maintain and/ or build muscle. This will make fat storage and weight gain more likely.

Increases appetite

Appetite is primarily controlled by the hypothalamus in the brain. It responds to a variety of stimuli, particularly a group of steroid hormones known as 'glucocorticoids'. Cortisol is one of the most powerful glucocorticoids and therefore has a stimulatory effect on a person's appetite. An increase in appetite often results in an increase in food intake and resultant weight gain or inability to lose weight. Therefore lowering cortisol may help to lower appetite.

How to Lower Cortisol (and Stress) Levels Effectively

Due to the various effects of stress mentioned here, high cortisol (stress) makes it very easy to put on weight (including fat) and very difficult to lose it. However, high cortisol (and stress) levels may be lowered effectively by relaxation techniques, meditation and breathing exercises. In today's society though, we are often too busy (and stressed!) to take the time to perform these exercises. It is sometimes easier to simply take a supplement!
BCN's Rhodiola Advanced is a powerful stress-relieving herb that has been shown to lower the effects of stress quickly and easily. It has been used in Russia and Scandinavia for decades! Also, Rhodiola Advanced has standardised levels of active ingredients to ensure you get maximum benefits from the product.
If you are suffering from high levels of stress in your life then BCN's Rhodiola Advancedmay be just what you need to reduce the effects of stress in your body and start losing weight!

Proven Methods to Avoid Overeating

If you have ever tried to lose weight, you know how difficult it is to stay clear of the foods that caused you to gain weight in the first place. Once you start a diet, how many times do you search for reasons to tell your self, it's ok, have a piece of cake or slice of pizza? If you're like me, fairly frequently. The problem is, once I have a "forbidden food", I tell myself I might as well go ahead and eat want I want the rest of the day and then start fresh tomorrow. Tomorrow comes then I tell myself, I will wait and get a fresh start on Monday. If you are a career dieter, you know exactly what I am talking about.
There are several situations that cause me to repeat this cycle over and over again.
I will share four of these situations and what I do to overcome the temptation.

Situation # 1 - Parties and Social Events
Christmas parties, birthday parties, anniversaries, weddings, etc. What they all have in common is an abundance of food. When you pass on that piece of pie or cheese dip, other guest encourage you to try just a little. They tell you one piece won't hurt; besides it's a special occasion. Soon you have a nibble then another and so on. Before you know it, you are stuffed and feeling guilty.

How I avoid it:
Just before leaving, I will enjoy a large healthy meal so I am full for the next couple of hours. If I do get hungry, and I typically do, the first thing I will go for is the veggie tray. Often times, veggies may not be available so a little food knowledge will come in handy. Search the table for other healthy alternatives. If there are sandwiches on whole grain bread, you are in good shape. If not, toss the bread and enjoy a piece of ham or turkey. Just stay away from the chicken wings, chips and dips. If you are asked to bring a dish, make sure it is healthy choice so you are sure to have a healthy snack. Many times I will bring the veggie tray and/or flavored rice cakes. If you have no other choice, choose the healthiest food and eat a small portion.

Situation #2 - Spouse or Significant Other Sabotage
It's difficult to eat healthy if your spouse or significant other does not necessarily eat the same way. Not that they would try to sabotage your diet, it's just not food choices they currently want to make.

How I avoid it:
My wife does not always eat the same things I do, but that's ok. We normally make enough chicken or fish to last a couple of days. That way I always have a good choice for a lunch, snack or dinner. If my wife decides she wants pasta and garlic bread, I boil broccoli, heat a piece of chicken and we are both happy. If she insists on Chinese, I will make the healthiest choice off the menu and eat in moderation. I just make sure it is the exception and not the rule.

Situation # 3 - When Looking in the Mirror, you don't see yourself as Overweight
How I avoid it.
Many times I look in the mirror and say to myself, "self, you don't look that over weight". When I see a picture with me in it, my response changes, it's more like, "Oh my gosh, I can't believe how fat I look. So grab your worst fat picture and keep it with you. Next time you decide you want a piece of pizza, look at the picture.

Situation # 4 - All or Nothing Attitude
This situation is my worst enemy. A cold Friday night, my wife and I snuggle up and watch a movie. She decides she wants pizza so I think about situation # 2 and say ok, I will have just a piece or two. Well the pizza gets there and I have a piece or two. Next thing I know, I am telling myself, "well, you already blew it, might as well eat all you want and start fresh tomorrow.

How I avoid it.
This is the most difficult situation for me. I find often times I just can't avoid it so we compromise. Normally, we decide I am too weak. She understands and supports my efforts to be healthy. We will opt instead to make our own pizza. You would be surprised how good a whole grain tortilla, grilled chicken, fat free cheese, tomato sauce, onion and turkey bacon taste oven baked!. There are times she will order a pizza but she will either get a personal size or the next smallest. That way, if I do fall to temptation, there will not be too much to eat.
